The most interesting things in the world happen at borders – the places where styles, cultures, cuisines and people mingle and meld. Take, for example, the Nipomo blanket, the latest bit of wonderfulness to come from the cultural spot where Mexico meets the United States.
Inspired by traditional Mexican textiles, a warm, colorful Nipomo blanket is an ideal all-season companion for Airstreamers. Spending a summer’s week at the shore? It’s the perfect beach or picnic blanket for up to four people. Leaf peeping in Vermont? Drape a Nipomo over your shoulders and the campfire will feel even cozier.
Nipomo blankets feature the vibrant colors and bold stripes reminiscent of traditional Latin American serapes. Choose your blanket from six collections, each offering different color palettes and designs. Most Nipomos are about 7 feet x 4 feet, and roll up to an Airstream-friendly 18 inches x 6 inches. Every blanket comes with a handmade vegetable-oil tanned leather strap and handle, so a rolled blanket stays rolled – and easy to carry.
The Nipomo process begins with designers in San Francisco, who draw inspiration from the majesty of Western landscapes. The blankets are woven from recycled poly cotton and acrylic by artisan weavers in a small town in Mexico. The leatherwork is done in San Diego.
Nipomo blankets are the creation of mother-daughter entrepreneurs Elizabeth and Liz, both of whom were born and raised in San Diego within sight of Mexico. Their product’s name honors the small California coastal town of Nipomo, whose founding family steeped their 13 children in all the local cultures, teaching them not just English, but also Spanish and the local Native American language.
When you wrap yourself in a Nipomo blanket, the warmth comes from more than the blanket. It comes, too, from knowing you are a supportive part of a diverse community with a heritage of reveling in the beauty that comes from sharing our best with each other.
