Airstream is all about helping people connect with nature. But our commitment to the outdoors goes beyond providing a way to experience beautiful places; it also means working to preserve and restore them. The Airstream community’s Caravan to Carbon Neutral partnership with the National Forest Foundation (NFF) embodies that philosophy.

According to a new report from the NFF, in 2024, Airstream and Airstream owners helped restore some 313 acres of National Forest land through the Caravan to Carbon Neutral partnership. The restoration included planting nearly 60,637 trees across three National Forests. That contribution brings the partnership’s four-year tree planting total to a remarkable 433,000 trees.
“Our National Forests are a sometimes underappreciated treasure,” said Airstream President and CEO Bob Wheeler. “The Airstream community’s ongoing support of these special places in partnership with the NFF is a point of pride for both the company and Airstream owners.”
The NFF is a Congressionally authorized nonprofit organization dedicated to conserving and enhancing the 193 million acres of national forests and grasslands across the United States. These lands, managed by the U.S. Forest Service, provide clean water, habitat for wildlife, and recreational opportunities for millions of Americans.

A Two-Pronged Approach to Reducing Carbon Impact
Caravan to Carbon Neutral is a two-pronged, industry-first effort to neutralize estimated carbon emissions created by the driving and towing of Airstream’s products and offer travelers the ability to offset the environmental cost of adventuring across America.
For all Airstreams made, the company plants enough trees through NFF to neutralize the estimated carbon emitted from driving the Airstream during the first year of ownership. This includes the estimated carbon emitted during the manufacturing and transportation of Airstreams to our US dealer network.*
All Airstreamers can help reduce their impact after the first year of ownership by purchasing Carbon Reduction Kits from Airstream's official store, Airstream Supply Company, via the National Forest Foundation – meaning 100 percent of your tax-deductible purchase supports the NFF’s tree-planting program.
Come See the Benefits
The three National Forests that benefited from Airstream-supported reforesting in 2024 are Chippewa National Forest in Minnesota, Lassen National Forest in California, and Shoshone National Forest in Wyoming.
Airstream’s 2024 Caravan to Carbon Neutral contribution helped NFF plant 24,881 trees in Chippewa National Forest. Several native species were planted – including pines, spruces, and burr oak – to help restore native forest habitats, diversify forest areas to support wildlife, and increase resilience to the emerald ash borer. The effort will also enhance forest health by adding long-living conifers and creating habitats for more bird species.
Set in north-central Minnesota, Chippewa is a year-round magnet for outdoor enthusiasts. The stunning forest has 21 developed campgrounds, 68 dispersed camping areas, hundreds of miles of biking, snowmobiling, and horseback riding trails, and 83 boating facilities. Truly, there is something for everyone at Chippewa.
At Lassen National Forest, Airstream supported planting 30,000 trees as part of a program to repair the scars from multiple wildfires. The Forest Service conducted extensive prep work to reduce the risk of future fires and ensure the project’s success. This included reducing competition from shrubs and non-native species. Among the native trees planted were incense cedar, Jeffrey pine, sugar pine, ponderosa pine, and Douglas fir.
Lassen, located about 125 miles north of Sacramento, offers a range of outdoor activities, from hiking and fishing to horseback riding and dirt biking. There are about 30 formal campgrounds, but you are also free to dry camp almost anywhere in the forest.
In the summer of 2016, the Lava Mountain Fire devastated thousands of acres across Wyoming’s Shoshone National Forest, America’s first National Forest. In 2024, Airstream enabled the planting of 5,756 trees as part of the NFF's contribution to the recovery efforts.
Shoshone, which adjoins Yellowstone National Park, features 2.4 million acres full of hiking trails and scenic roadways winding through wildflower meadows, alpine lakes and 1.4 million acres of designated wilderness. The forest is a paradise for hikers, backpackers, mountain bikers, and anyone who just loves a good long nature bath.
Pay It Forward
Ready to join the Airstream community and support this kind of work in the National Forests? It’s easy enough. Go to Caravan to Carbon Neutral and purchase your 2025 Carbon Reduction Kit. The program has three levels, allowing you to plant between 50 and 250 trees to ensure the survival of these special places for generations to come.
*NFF has committed to use best efforts, along with the United States Forest Service, to complete tree planting within twelve (12) months of receipt of funds; carbon sequestration estimates through tree planting are calculated using the value of .5 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) sequestered per tree over its estimated lifetime of 100 years. The estimated number of trees required to sequester the targeted carbon was calculated using Airstream sales forecasts, findings from an internal customer usage study, greenhouse gas equivalency calculators developed by the Environmental Protection Agency, Bureau of Transportation Statistics fuel efficiency estimates for gasoline-powered vehicles, publicly reported estimates from Mercedes-Benz, an Airstream aerodynamics study, and tree carbon sequestration estimates from the United States Department of Agriculture. Airstream’s Caravan to Carbon Neutral program is not a registered carbon sequestration program.
