It’s that time of year again: football season. It’s without a doubt the busiest time of year for me, with many games every week and lots of travel as a CBS News special correspondent – and I love every minute of it. It’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of it all, but little things like having an Airstream Interstate Touring Coach help me stay grounded.
First of all, and most importantly, our Interstate makes family time on the road so much easier and more exciting. I’ve talked a little bit about it before, and since last year we’ve taken our Interstate to southern Maryland, North Carolina, and Hersheypark in Pennsylvania – which was especially fun for the grandkids.
Even with four grandkids, their parents, and my wife and I, our Interstate has room for everyone. We even used it on a five-hour drive to pick up my father-in-law, who’s almost 90 years old. He uses a walker, so it’s important for him to get in a vehicle with plenty of space. The Interstate made that possible and comfortable, and we all got to spend irreplaceable time with each other. It’s all about building those quality moments together.
One of my favorite features of the Interstate is actually the removable table in the middle of the coach. That might sound strange, but what I love about it is the fact that we can sit around it together and engage with one another. We get a chance to fellowship, to converse. It really makes the Interstate feel like a traveling home.
Recently I’ve been on a health and weight loss journey, and today I’m about 84 pounds lighter than I was this time last year. And let me tell you: it all starts in the kitchen. When you’re busy, it’s easy to snack and eat out, but I’ve dedicated myself to light, healthy meals no matter where I am and how full my schedule is.
That’s where the Interstate is a lifesaver. My wife and I pack healthy meals and snacks before we leave, or pull out and prep fresh food while we’re on the road. I’m never without options, so I’m never forced to make unhealthy choices. Even the grandkids have developed a taste for healthy snacks, which I love to see. I want us all to feel good, every day of our lives.
For years, I’ve seen other hosts and correspondents use touring coaches to travel and keep up with work and I’ve thought, ‘Well, duh. Now that’s being productive. I’ve got to get one of those.’ And now, I’m all set with everything I need, from multiple TVs and satellite service to convenient spaces to work inside and outside.
I can set up at the table, swivel the driver’s seat around, and catch up on emails. I can stretch out in the back and watch highlights and scores. Or I can take a book outside and read under the awning, during the day and well into the night.
My family had a great year with our Interstate – or our Heavenly School Bus, as my grandkids like to call it. But we have so much more we want to do and see together. Maybe next year, we’ll finally get the chance to take the family to Disney Land. Or maybe my wife and I will make that cross-country drive she’s been talking about. And I wouldn’t mind stopping by a few car shows, football training camps, and tailgates. The Interstate makes a great conversation piece!
Whatever your plans for next year are, I hope you get the chance to make some memories with your own family, because family is what really matters in life. That’s my wish for you. That, and a successful fantasy football season!
