Launched in 2021, the Airstream Interstate 24X Touring Coach is our most rugged yet. It’s designed for those who want to go places they can’t normally go in luxury vehicles, while still having all the creature comforts along for the ride.
Airstream expert Justin Humphreys walks you through all the features that make the 24X the perfect adventure companion. Watch the full video here, or scroll for a written summary.
The Chassis - Sprinter 3500 EXT
Every Airstream Interstate is built on a Mercedes-Benz® Sprinter van chassis. Why? It’s simply the best in engineering, safety, and driving comfort. Mercedes-Benz gives us a host of optional features, and we choose as many as we can to keep the driving and riding experience top-of-the-line.
Quick Interstate 24X Specs:
24 feet, 6 inches long
3.0L V6 Turbo Diesel engine
7 Speed Automatic w/ 188 HP & 325 lbs. of torque
Four-Wheel Drive (4WD)
16-18 mpg (highway)
6 total passengers
Sleeps 2 (+1 with the aftermarket cockpit bed)
The Exterior
Around the exterior of the 24X, you’ll notice it’s designed to be ready for anything. Up top, the roof rack holds a heavy-duty dual row LED light bar, 2 camp pod LED lights on the curb side to illuminate your campsite, and 2 separate LED lights to light up everything behind the 24X.
Durable black protective coating entry steps span the 170 inch distance between the front and rear all-terrain tires. The step is designed with anti-slip grooves to help keep your footing and will also assist with protecting the 24X body while adventuring a little further away from the asphalt.
Similar to the entry steps, the exterior lower side moldings, front and rear bumpers, front air dam, and even the steel Mercedes-Benz wheels include a highly durable spray-on protective coating to help prevent rocks and other road debris from damaging the body paint.
At the very front of the coach are modern Bi-Xenon LED headlights, fog lamps, a bumper step to make it easy to reach and clean the windshield without a ladder, and multiple integrated sensors as part of the Parktronic Parking Assist safety system.
Near the roof rack at the rear of the coach is a rear view camera for backing up and parking. This camera feeds directly to a monitor where a rearview mirror would normally be and can be kept on while traveling to ensure the driver always has a view of what's going on behind them on the road.
The same parking sensors that are built into the front bumper are blended into the rear bumper as well. Whether it be a wall, vehicle, or any other physical structure, the Parktronic Assist system indicates the distance to the object on the MBUX and will alert the driver as the vehicle moves closer so accidental fender benders can be avoided. In combination with the rear view camera, the Parktronic Assist system makes backing and parking the 24X a simple and fun experience for drivers of all experience levels.
The rear of the motorhome also includes an exposed hitch which is part of the Mercedes-Benz tow package that comes standard. With a 7-pin trailer plug and brake control pre-wire straight from the factory, you can easily hitch small trailers to bring toys like jet skis, quads, or small boats along for the adventure. A rear hitch also makes it possible to attach a carrier basket or enclosed cargo box for storing extra gear.
When you open the rear doors, you’ll see that the Interstate 24X separates itself from the competition with the vast amount of space available in the rear of the touring coach. With 16 foot of livable space length (from the edge of the cockpit to the rear door), you can fit a whole kayak, stand up paddle-boards, fishing poles, or even multiple bikes.
On the floor, walls, and ceiling of the Interstate 24X is our aluminum aircraft L-track storage system with quick-release latches to help you secure your gear or suspend it from multiple points.
For cool nights when you want to let a breeze flow through the 24X, the rear roll-down screen keeps the bugs away. A blackout shade also covers the rear screen for privacy.
On the “campsite side” (or passenger side) of the coach you have your LP refill port, a quick connection for a gas grill, a 110V inverted outlet, an additional solar panel input, a powered retractable awning with LED lighting, and undercarriage lighting.
Together it makes for a dream campsite setup with all the power, shade, and lighting you need.
At the power sliding entry door, you’ll find a sliding screen door and a place to setup an outdoor table, which can be the perfect place to serve snacks, set up your fishing lines, or even get some work done at a standing desk.
The Cockpit
Stepping inside the cockpit is like getting behind the wheel of a Mercedes-Benz – because that’s exactly what you’re doing. From the leather-wrapped steering wheel with controls at your fingertips to the voice-controlled infotainment dash, it’s all luxury, all the way through. Need hands-free directions? Just say “Mercedes” and the vehicle will respond.
As we pointed out at the rear of the coach, the rear view camera feeds directly to a monitor where a mirror would normally be. It’s a natural driving and parking experience, but safer than ever.
The cockpit seats are powered, heated, and covered in Ultraleather®, a fabric we consistently choose for its durability, resistance to stains, and easy cleanup. The cockpit seats also swivel around to face the interior of the coach.
Swivel the driver’s chair around to create a mobile office with the modular solid surface table. You also have a 110V outlet and several USB ports conveniently located below the table for charging your laptop and phone simultaneously. Plus, a reading light above the table provides the perfect amount of lighting for late nights and the short L-track segment creates a space for gear storage while traveling that would otherwise be empty.
The Galley
In the galley (kitchen) portion of the coach, you have every appliance you need, and tons of storage. The 71-inch solid surface countertop is great for food prep, including a sink cover and a tempered glass cover for the two-burner gas stove. The black matte faucet and red accent lighting contribute to a uniquely Interstate 24X vibe.
Below the counter, you’ll find netted storage cubbies and deep drawers for pots, pans, dishes, utensils, cleaning supplies, and more.
Located above the galley countertop is a storage cabinet and a 0.7 cu. ft. locker microwave which can be operated even while not being plugged into shore power. The 2.5 kW propane Ultra-Quiet generator with auto start functionality works in tandem with the 50 amp multi-stage charger and 2,000 watt pure sine inverter to allow use of the microwave from anywhere.
Across from the counter is a pantry with pull-out storage, adjustable shelves, and a ribbed rod in case you'd like to use it as a wardrobe. Next to the pantry is your all-electric, 5.0 cu. ft. refrigerator with a separate 1.6 cu. ft. drawer freezer compartment. The 12 volt refrigerator is energy efficient and cools much quicker than absorption-style refrigerators.
The Bathroom
The Interstate 24X bathroom is what’s called a “wetbath,” meaning the shower isn’t separated from the toilet and sink area, and the entire bathroom is designed to get wet. This kind of ultra-efficient, easy-to-clean bathroom is popular across Europe. In the shower, you’ll find a built-in holder for shampoo, conditioner, and body wash, so you don’t have to worry about loose bottles. In comparison to other adventure-style Class B Vans, the 24X wet bath is rather large which brings a level of convenience during usage and additional storage when not.
The 24X includes a 23 gallon fresh water tank, 24 gallon grey tank, and 11 gallon black tank. As part of the waste system, it includes a macerator pump with a power hose reel to make emptying waste a seamless process.
The Flexible Lounge and Sleeping Area
The entire rear of the 24X interior is a large, versatile space for lounging, working, dining, and sleeping, depending on how you set it up. With 7' (84 inches) of usable space from the rear door to the galley, this enormous area can meet the needs of any modern nomad.
Two benches line the walls of the touring coach and house storage for gear, clothes, and the removable table that comes with the coach.
On top of each bench are foam cushions designed to be as comfortable for sitting as they are for sleeping. You can use the benches as separate sleeping spaces, or convert the entire space to one big bed – the largest in its class.
Four flexible LED reading lights are located in each corner of the bed and all include a USB port to charge your phone or other devices.
Above the lounge/sleeping area are two rows of rack storage with soft sides. You can adjust the storage to work for your gear, or remove it altogether if that’s what works for your trip.
That completes our walkthrough of the highlighted featured throughout the Interstate 24X. Watch the video above for even more details, and browse features, photos, and more on the Interstate 24X product page.
